Contemporary Gunmakers & Allied Artists Show

Campus Martius Museum will once again host its annual salute to traditional gunmakers and artists of the Ohio Valley February 13th, 9:30 until 4:00. From the first arrival of the Ohio Company settlers to present day this area has always been the forefront of quality craftsmanship. Firearms were an essential tool in everyday life and used not only for hunting but for competition shooting. The makers of these longrifles took great pride in their workmanship in the same manner as today’s craftsman do their work.
Campus Martius will feature the work of several dozen traditional gunmakers from around the Ohio Valley as well as several other craftsmen who work in the manner of the 18th and 19th century. Many of these artists are nationally recognized for their work which can be found in museums and private collections around the country. Featured along with the gunmakers will be horn makers, hunting bag makers, leather workers, tinsmithing, cabinet making and other allied trades.
Featured this year will be the art of the horn worker. Cattle horns were used in a variety of objects from powderhorns to transparent windows in lanterns, drinking cups, spoons and measures. Many horn workers would decorate their wares with names and other artistic designs. This art was called scrimshaw and added a personal touch to the work. Matt Blosser, a horn worker from Glenmont, Ohio will be demonstrating scrimshaw decoration throughout the day and will be available to answer questions about this lost art.

President’s Day at the Museum

Presidents’ Day is typically a day set aside to honor George Washington and Abraham Lincoln but there are 44 U.S. Presidents to be recognized. This year we are going to look at a number of different presidents and learn interesting and sometimes amusing stories and facts about them. Some presidents you may never have heard of! Come to Campus Martius Museum and find out why Ohio earned the nickname, “the Mother of Presidents”. Join us for crafts, activities, and games as we learn about the presidency, the men from Ohio who became president, and the various symbols that represent Ohio and our nation.

The crowd was hushed as the museum proprietor got ready to unveil the prized display of the evening, the Lickety-Split Diamond, only to find it had been stolen while the crowd mingled in ignorant bliss. Now it is up to you, your guests, and the detective to find the thief and restore the diamond to its rightful place, getting unveiling back on track!
Who is the carat caper, and who will solve the crime to make this night of mystery the night of beauty it was intended to be? Dress in your fanciest evening gowns and suits – Optional. Guest Speaker: Drew Tanner/ Photographic Artist of Williamstown, W. Va.
Drew Tanner has worked as a journalist, photographer, arts administrator and freelance digital media consultant. He currently serves as Marketing Director for the historic Peoples Bank Theatre in downtown Marietta. Equally comfortable in the traditional and digital darkroom, over the past five years, his photography has branched into 19th century historic processes, including the making of ambrotypes, tintypes, glass negatives, ivorytypes and salt printing.
His teachers have included both long-time wet-plate photographer John Coffer and Photographic Process Historian Mark Osterman, of the George Eastman Museum. Through these historic processes, Drew engages with photography as a very hands-on, physical medium, rather than digital abstraction. The processes themselves demand that attention and focus on the craftsmanship of the photographic object itself.

With degrees in history from Kenyon College and American Material Culture from the Winterthur Program/University of Delaware, Andrew’s passion is the decorative arts of Ohio. He has lectured and published widely on the subject and has curated two major exhibition: Equal in Goodness: Ohio Decorative Arts 1788-1860 and A Tradition of Progress: Ohio Decorative Arts 1860-1945. He also serves on the boards of several museums and decorative arts organizations.

Contrary to popular beliefs, the Ohio frontier was not a remote backwoods devoid of style. Trade via the rivers and lakes, and later, the canals, provided easy access to all manner of goods produced in eastern urban centers and in Europe. While early Ohioans did import great quantities of goods, they also produced equally great quantities of goods as well. Using both documentary evidence and surviving objects, we’ll examine the wide range of goods both made and used in on the Ohio frontier, and how trade networks and consumer choice played key roles in the furnishing of frontier homes.

A member of the West Virginia Storytelling Guild and Ohio Order for the Preservation of Storytelling, Judi is a storyteller whose repertoire includes fascinating historic programs, tales with Appalachian heart, ghostly tales to send a shiver up your spine, and hilarious tales that get taller each time they’re told. On August 6th come to celebrate museum day and discover everything that Campus Martius and the Ohio River Museum has to offer.
A visit to the museums will not just be for historical discovery but also accented by a variety of musicians playing a cornucopia of melodies from an earlier era. There will be something for everyone from toddlers to seniors. Storytellers will abound with tall tales to leave you on the edge of your seat.
Children will delight with narratives such as Steamboat Annie and the Giant Catfish. Adults can listen to accounts by Chuck Parrish as he takes a trip to the past to show the history of Ohio River Navigation. Doc Hollen, Purveyor of Patent Medicine, will be on hand with his Medicine Show to entertain and mystify. Visitors can step back in time when con men traveled the country side telling tall tales and selling snake oil to cure all.
This is just a little of what the day will offer! So, mark your calendars for Saturday, August 6, 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM at Campus Martius & the Ohio River Museums. And remember, this entire event is FREE!

Ohio Furniture 101: An Introduction to Styles and Cultural Groups, 1788-1888
During Ohio’s first century, immigrants flooded into the state from nearly every other state in the Union, as well as from Europe. Because of the organized method by which Ohio was parceled out and settled, oftentimes, groups of immigrants from one place came west and settled in the same area, and many of these groups brought with them lifestyles and stylistic preferences. As a result, we can use the furniture made in Ohio during its first hundred years to “map” these cultural groups, and we can see evidence of the style each brought to Ohio, and how each style was adapted to life in early Ohio.

Robin will portray Lilly Martin Spencer (born Angelique Marie Martin) (November 26, 1822 – May 22, 1902) Lilly Martin Spencer was one of the most popular and widely reproduced American female genre painters in the mid-nineteenth century. She painted domestic scenes, women and children in a warm happy atmosphere. Although she did have an audience for her work, Spencer had difficulties earning a living as a professional painter and was in perpetual state of financial turmoil. Born in England to French parents, Lilly and her family moved to the Marietta area and settled in Devola when Lilly was 8. Robin will portray Lilly in her later years for Brown Baggin’ thru History at Campus Martius Museum.

“Digging the Past” Archaeology Day

Have you ever wondered what lies below the ground that was left there hundreds of years ago by people long forgotten? These ancient relics were once the everyday tools from a past civilization. Some times they represent the only clues to our understanding of their culture.
Join professional archaeologists, collectors, and contemporary flint knappers to explore the function of these relics and the development of the skill and technology period craftsmen employed to create them.
The day’s activities include lectures, displays of both pre-historic and historic artifacts from private collections from around the state as well as demonstrations of flint knapping. Artifacts representing the Adena and Hopewell peoples will be displayed along side of artifacts from the colonial period that were collected at many military camp sites and native villages in Ohio.
Various lectures will be given throughout the day by trained archaeologists and collectors.
