“Travel ’16.” Host an event to unite your community and show your support, raising awareness of travel’s impact and importance in your destination.
HOW TO MAKE TRAVEL RALLY DAY A LOCAL SUCCESS

• Take the lead and rally your local hospitality workforce, along with elected officials and
business leaders, and host a 30- or 45-minute event on Tuesday, May 3.
• Secure a rally location of adequate size, like local landmarks, attractions, hotels or
convention centers, and follow necessary permit-requirements and protocols.
• Activate your community and invite travel supporters and identify relevant speakers,
from elected officials, board chairs or travel workers.
• Set the stage with proper lighting and a podium for speakers and pass out banners,
signs and other merchandise for rally-goers to keep them engaged.
• Sell the story using resources from U.S. Travel to form your public remarks, localizing
them with data on jobs, spending and tax revenue that are specific to your area.
TRAVEL BUSINESSES:
• Join an organizing committee at your local convention and visitor’s bureau.
• Authorize employees to participate and ask them to wear their uniforms at the rally.

Summer Reading Program

Summer Reading is a program that entices students to read when school is not in session, thus helps children and teens retain and improve the reading skills gained during the school year. Over 85% of parents surveyed agree that their children read more this summer because of the program, that their reading skills improved due to the program, that the program has made their children more excited about reading, and that independent reading done outside of school assignments because children want to is vital to their literacy skills.

Summer Reading Programs works by encouraging students to set goals, choose books, reach reading milestones with the help of parents and library staff, and best of all, participants get to collect incentive and earn cool prizes as rewards for their reading efforts.

We count on you to make our Summer Reading a smashing program; count on us to make it a rewarding and enjoyable summer for you!

Celebrate September, National Library Card Month

September is Library Card Sign-up Month and National City Public Library wants to make sure that parents and children have the smartest card of all – a library card.

A library card has always been the most important school supply of all. Kids can come to the library to get homework help, check out books, and use the Internet to make after school life a little more fun. Of course, library cards are not just for kids. According to a recent household survey by the American Library Association, 44% of parents report that they bring their children to the library because it gives them something to do together. Parents can help their children explore new interests and, at the same time, enjoy a family program or pick out a best seller for themselves. Best of all, family time at the library won’t break the bank. The library and its resources are free with a library card.

Parents, make sure your kids gear up for school by signing up for a library card! No matter how crammed the backpack or a family’s schedule, there’s always room for the smartest card of all, a library card.

Fourth of July travel close to record-breaking in San Diego tourism

Be prepared for larger crowds at beaches and amusement parks, and more congested freeways and roadways, as more than 3 million Southern Californians prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July.

The number of area residents traveling during the upcoming holiday weekend will be the highest since 2002, the Automobile Club of Southern California is predicting. And San Diego will be a key beneficiary of that, ranked by the auto club as the top destination for Southern California residents. It has had the No. 1 ranking five of the last six years.

  2. Las Vegas
  3. San Francisco

Credit falling gas prices and a rebounding tourism industry that has seen more people traveling in general.

The average price for a gallon of gas in San Diego currently stands at $2.93, significantly less than the $3.53 during the same time last year, according to the auto club. In the Los Angeles-Long Beach metro area, the current average is $2.97, compared with $3.57 a year ago.

The majority of Southern California travelers — 2.41 million — are expected to drive to their weekend destinations, a 1 percent increase from last year, the auto club reported. An additional 375,000 are forecast to fly, which represents a 3 percent increase over 2015.

The larger increase in air travel may well be fueled by falling airfares. According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, average airfares for the top 40 domestic flight routes will be 9 percent lower this Fourth of July, with an average round-trip ticket costing $207.

San Diego hotel general manager Scott Hermes says Fourth of July is generally a sellout for most local hotels, although business can lag in those years when the holiday falls during the middle of the week. This year it will be on a Monday.

“It’s especially good for the hotels along the water where you can view the fireworks from your room or outside,” said Hermes, manager of the Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter. “It’s looking like a fair number of downtown hotels are already full for this Saturday.”

In general, July is always San Diego’s strongest month for tourism, and this year, it’s expected to be even more so, given that the city will be hosting the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, which includes several days of activities at the Convention Center and elsewhere downtown. Comic-Con’s four-day pop culture extravaganza July 21-24 will draw more than 130,000 attendees, and San Diego Pride weekend a week earlier is also expected to bring a high number of out-of-towners.

Nationwide, weekend travel is expected to reach record levels. The auto club is forecasting that nearly 43 million Americans will travel over the holiday, which is 5 million more than the recent Memorial Day weekend.
