Best Surfing Spots on the U.S. West Coast

If you got a chance to read our “Best Surfing Spots on the U.S. East Coast”, you know that the East Coast features several popular surfing spots for both beginners and pros alike. Don’t worry if you live on the West Coast, as there’s even more well-known and famous place to catch strong waves on the West coast. Surfing on the West Coast is one of the most popular water activities, especially since many of the states feature vibrant coastal towns and piers. Below, Prompt Charters has gathered a list of a few of the most popular and respected surfing spots on the West Coast, excluding off-lying states Alaska and Hawaii.

Santa Cruz, CA

With the reputation as one of the best surf towns in the United States, Santa Cruz is sure to not disappoint. With the Kawananokoa brothers riding the first waves at the beach in the 1800s, the town’s reputation only grew. The area’s water features translates to rideable waves almost every day for the entire year. The 40-mile stretch of the town’s coast features more than 70 great places to surf. Cowell’s Beach, Pleasure Point, and Steamer Lane are a few of the more notable places to catch a wave in Santa Cruz. The town itself screams a laid back and casual vibe, even though its only 90 minutes from the giant San Francisco. A great art scene, fantastic wine festivities, beautiful nature, and the waves all make Santa Cruz one of the most popular surf towns in the States.

Huntington Beach, CA

Huntington Beach, another amazing Californian beach, is a popular spot for surfers, swimmers, and those just looking to enjoy the beach. The combination of the board walk, the vibrant dining and night life, and the long pier make for a very enjoyable day at Huntington Beach. Not only is the actual beach good, but so are the waves. Throughout the different tides, the waves swell up to offer a surfing experience for both beginners and seasoned pros. In fact, the U.S. Open of Surfing show takes place every year at Huntington Beaches throughout the latter summer months. If you’re looking to visit a great surfing spot on the West Coast, don’t miss out on heading to Huntington.

Maverick’s, CA

It doesn’t get more intense than Maverick’s, the famous break at Half Moon Bay that lies nearby San Fran. We recommend this spot only for hardcore surfers and pros for several reasons. The Pacific currents of the break are very cold most of the year, so we recommend getting a wet-suit from a nearby rental shop. The rip tide and sharp rocks also make the surfing experience dangerous. Several lives have been claimed by waves at Maverick’s, so once again we only suggest this spot for those who have the skill to ride for their life.

Cape Lookout, OR

Even though California hogs many of the popular surf spots, there are several in Oregon, with Cape Lookout being one of the best. Located in a state park, the spot offers visitors to enjoy the flora of the area before hitting the waves. Speaking of waves, they get pretty big and peak fast at Cape Lookout, so we recommend staying closer to shallow waters if you’re a beginner. The water itself is the clearest and pure Oregon has to offer, which offers surfers an even better experience. We would recommend bringing a jacket to the park, as the winds near the water can get pretty cold. But if you’re looking for an amazing surf spot in Oregon, Cape Lookout is a must-go.

Westport, WA

If you’re looking to get away from the city life of Olympia or Seattle, Westport is the place to go. The coastal town is popular with the locals, so you might experience some crowds (especially during the weekends.) If you’re looking to find the best waves in Westport, head to the south side of the long jetty located near the entrance to Grays Harbor. The waves here are consistent throughout most of the year, so its another great place for both beginners and pros. Don’t miss out on the opportunity of catching a wave at Westport if you’re in Washington!
